The paper gives an interpretation of the physical processes in the activity of a thermionic convertor from the radiotechnical and thermodynamical point of view and information on the state of research into practically applicable thermoelectron convertors. Two types of convertors are mentioned: a vacuum convertor with a small distance between the electrodes, and a convertor with cesium vapours, the construction of which is technically simpler. The paper describes three kinds of working regimes of the convertor with cesium vapours: knudsen, diffusion and plasmatic. These regimes are evaluated from the point of view of suitability for application. In connection with the conversion of nuclear into electrical energy in a thermionic convertor, a description is given of a convertor constructed in Los Alamos and the perspectives are shown for the building of a special reactor-convertor. … full description
