Drought has recently become a climatic extreme that has occured in the Czech Republic more frequently and has had a more severe impact. In order to be able to run a competitive agricultural sector, it is necessary to have the basic information on the current drought condition and short-term forecasts. The aim of this study is to introduce the Integrated Drought
Monitoring System (IDMS) that monitors the current state and evolution of drought by means of several independent methods. The basic source of outputs is the SoilClim model of water balance that works with current meteorological characteristics, land-use data (type of used land), slope exposure and inclination, interception, soil type and information on groundwater. The output consists of maps that describe the so called agricultural drought intensity derived from the calculation of the relative soil saturation up to 1 m (divided into two layers 0.0-0.4 m and 0.4-1.0 m). The IDMS monitors the condition of vegetation (vegetation index) using satellite images and cooperates with a number of experts, who perform real-time assessment of the drought on their land and at the same time they monitor its impact on the existing crops. Using these parameters, the drought episode from March to the end of the year 2015 was assessed. The results describe occurrence of a 50 to 100-year agricultural drought in great part of the Czech Republic. The results in the form of maps are available on www.intersucho.cz .
