Biomass and functional meaning of coprophagous beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae, Geotrupidae, Hydrophilidae) in two pastures in South Bohemia
To chci
The dry weight biomass of coprophagous beetles in simultaneously exposed pitfall traps was examined in upland pastures at Jenín and Pasečná in the southern part of the Czech Republic. The functional meaning of the species and their functional groups (dung dwellers, tunnelers) were discussed on the basis of these data. The bulk of the total biomass in the samples
was formed by two dung dwellers on both the sites: Sphaeridium lunatum Fabricius, 1792 contributed by 44% and 25%, and Aphodius rufipes (Linnaeus, 1758) by 19% and 17% to total biomass (sum of mean biomass/trap/trial) at Jenín and Pasečná, respectively. Three tunnelers, Anoplotrupes stercorosus (Hartmann in L. G. Scriba, 1791), Geotrupes stercorarius (Linnaeus, 1758) and Onthophagus fracticornis (Preyssler, 1790) formed the next 37% of the total biomass at Pasečná, while at Jenín the tunnelers contributed by less than 1% to the total biomass. The importance of tunnelers for nutrient cycling and other ecosystem functions arises from their digging activity related to underground nest construction. Although the dung dwellers, mainly S. lunatum and A. rufipes, may contribute to dung decomposition at both the pastures, the beneficial impacts of tunnelers on the physical and chemical properties of soil can be expected to be higher at Pasečná than at Jenín.
